When to turn your sprinklers on
Wait until the risk of a hard freeze has passed. Along the Wasatch Front that is usually early to mid May on the valley floor and mid to late May on the upper benches.
Utah lawns rarely need watering in April. The Utah Division of Water Resources publishes a weekly lawn watering guide, which is a good way to know when your area actually needs water.
Turn the water on slowly
The most common spring damage happens in the first 30 seconds. Opening the main valve all the way sends a surge of water into empty pipes, and the pressure spike, called water hammer, can crack fittings and blow off heads.
Open the supply valve a little at a time and let the lines fill slowly before running zones.
