What Is Winterization?
Winterizing — or “blowing out” — your sprinkler system means forcing every bit of standing water out of the pipes with compressed air before winter. Any water left behind will freeze, expand, and can crack your mainlines, split valves, and destroy your backflow preventer.
Utah winters are exactly the kind that cause this damage: warm fall days lull homeowners into waiting, then a sudden hard freeze arrives. Because our ground freezes deep and fast, draining alone isn’t enough — the low spots in your lines still hold water. A proper air blow-out is the only reliable way to protect the system.
A single cracked backflow or busted valve can cost far more to repair than a season of blow-outs. Winterizing is cheap insurance for an expensive system.
When to Blow Out Your Sprinklers
Along the Wasatch Front, the sweet spot is generally early-to-mid October — after your lawn has stopped actively growing but before the first hard, sustained freeze. As a rule of thumb, schedule your blow-out once overnight lows start dipping toward the low 30s.
You don’t need to wait for the first freeze — it’s far safer to be a couple of weeks early than one night too late. Higher-elevation areas like Alpine, Highland, and the east benches freeze sooner and should book earlier.
Spots fill up fast in the fall, so we recommend getting on the schedule early. Once your system is blown out, keep the water shut off until spring.
The Process
We close your main irrigation shut-off (stop-and-waste or curb stop) so no new water can enter the system while we work.
The backflow assembly is the most freeze-sensitive part of your system. We relieve pressure and drain it so it can’t crack over winter.
Using a commercial air compressor, we push all standing water out of your mainlines, lateral lines, valves, and sprinkler heads, zone by zone.
We switch your timer to the “off” or “rain” position so it won’t run through the winter while the system is dry.
Leave the system shut down until the weather warms and the freeze risk has passed — then call us for a spring start-up.
Cost of Sprinkler Blow-Outs in Utah
A DIY blow-out takes one to two hours and costs about as much as the air compressor you use — whether you buy or rent one. Keep in mind that smaller consumer compressors are slower and far less thorough, so it’s easy to leave water behind in the lines you can’t clear.
